Gig Swig: Slum Party #2 @ The Labour Club, Northampton (Saturday 19th March 2011)

Matt Riviere
Slum Party #2 takes a more chilled vibe from the vibe bag tonight, with Eric Rivera and Matt Riviere. To set the scene, The Labour Club has been transformed into a lounge; with the stage at an angle, and the table and chairs spread out all over the shop. Eric Rivera hops, skips and jumps onto the stage and proceeds to win over the crowd with his enthusiastic banter and sweetly simple songs. Rivera single-handedly proves that all you need is a dollop of fun, an acoustic guitar and a great voice to light up the lives of a bunch of people. Matt Riviere headlines with his gloomy gospel of dramatic piano chords, loud beats and weird noises. If you're a fan of music that doesn't sound quite right, then Matt Riviere is your go to guy. The room floods with distorted loops while his deadpan choruses try and make it to the surface. Most punters dig it, but some exclaim "this sounds like death". So you've got to give it up for the guy, because managing to sound like death is no easy feat.
